The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in partnership with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Niagara Parks Police and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO), conducted a two-day traffic and community safety initiative within the Niagara Region, on February 5 and 6.
The focus of this safety initiative was to conduct criminal detection, high visibility patrols, targeted enforcement and public education on provincial highways and communities within the Niagara Region.
The initiative was supported by OPP, NRPS and RCMP canine units, MTO commercial vehicle inspectors and specialized enforcement officers focusing on both passenger and commercial traffic.
As a result of this initiative, officers conducted 618 traffic stops that resulted in 285 Provincial offence notices and 11 criminal charges.
The use of the automatic licence plate recognition (ALPR) system led to the identification of a stolen vehicle. Officers subsequently performed a traffic stop of the vehicle which resulted in the seizure of suspected drugs. The accused has been charged with several Criminal Code offences, including possession of stolen property, possession and trafficking of drugs as well as obstruct a police officer.
Police laid dozens of charges in other occurrences, including charges related to driving under suspension, driving without insurance and careless driving.
The OPP and its valued partners remain committed to working collaboratively to combat criminal activity and enhance public safety on roads and in the communities we serve. Anyone with any information in relation to unlawful activity is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or the police service of jurisdiction.
