Niagara Regional Police say human remains were discovered Wednesday in West Lincoln but so far what led to the person's death or who the person was are still being determined.

Police say at 6:30 p.m., 8 District (Grimsby/Lincoln/West Lincoln) uniform officers responded to the area of Young Street and South Grimsby Road 6, a rural area northwest of Smithville in the Township of West Lincoln, following a report of human remains being found.

When officers arrived, they discovered that a resident had located a jawbone, believed to be human.

Further investigation located further remains along with clothing, police said in a news release.

Police were on scene Thursday night as they continued to investigate with help from the Forensic Services Unit and a forensic anthropologist.
