We are deeply saddened to share the news of Greg’s passing from pneumonia on December 10th, 2024 in his 64th year. Greg leaves behind his loving brothers, Bruce (Melody) and Jim (Amy) and dear nephews, Glen, Jim, Rob and Jack Williamson. Greg was predeceased by his beloved parents, Bruce (2009) and Beverley (2020). Greg was fortunate to have a large and loving extended family including Ken and Joyce (2020) Marks, Sharon and Bruce Vollick and Doug and Effie (2006) Williamson. Greg will be fondly remembered by his many cousins with whom he spent so much of his happy childhood with at Queenston Heights picnics, Sunday dinners, birthday celebrations and holiday gatherings.
Greg spent most of his youth in local arenas playing hockey in the winter and at the Grantham Optimist Park playing fastball in summers. Greg enjoyed coaching hockey and softball and serving as the player/manager for the mighty Hideaway Kings Slo-Pitch Team for several years. Later, Greg volunteered for the Housing Help Centre delivering furniture to families in need. A devoted Blue Jays fan, Greg was thrilled to be at the SkyDome in 1993 when Joe Carter 'touched them all' in the second of their back-to-back World Series wins. Alas, he never got to see his beloved Bills hoist the Lombardi trophy but did enjoy the incredible run they had in the early ‘90s and their winning ways in the last several years.
Greg worked at the St. Catharines Standard for many years including time as a press operator. Big Ed, as he was known to his many friends, was a natural leader whose blazing wit and intelligence was matched with a kind-hearted and generous spirit. Greg was a soulful poet and lyricist and lead singer for local rhythm and blues band, Jumpin' Bad. Greg's influence on those fortunate enough to be in his orbit was enormous and will survive him for years to come.
Our family is incredibly grateful for the wonderful care and support Greg was provided by the administrative, nursing and PSW staff at the March of Dimes and Extendicare.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place early next year. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the March of Dimes (Housing Program) or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by Greg’s family. https://donate.mytributegift.org/?cid=840c725a9bb5b08f7f6b9f9db9514749b8715680e37e119cd4dc3c506d35ee43&fh=FRP-308918&fp=3089186b5c6c0632d102cc0b9fbb841d8e
