Predeceased by his beloved wife Yanthie (2007).  Cherished father of Neshanthi (Kevin) Sloan, Janaka (Kristy) Perera and Dil (Ian) Troup.  Loving grandfather to Jared, Noah and Naomi.  Devoted brother of Manel (Lakshman) Perera and Sriyani Perera of Dalugama, Sri Lanka and Nalin (Priya) Perera of Melborne, Australia.  Revered Uncle to Samantha (Shandala) Perera, Chaminda (Vasana)Perera, Dhineli (Asela) Silva and Duane Perera of Melborne, Australia.

Mel was born in Dalugama, Sri Lanka to Millicent and Michael Perera.  He studied Physiotherapy and worked as a therapist in Sri Lanka while also serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Sri Lankan army for 4 years. Mel immigrated to Canada with his wife and baby daughter in 1968 where he enjoyed a 50-year career as a Physiotherapist in the Niagara region.   30 years at Greater Niagara General Hospital was followed by many years in his private clinic.   Later in his career he worked at physiotherapy clinics in Welland and Thorold in addition to providing home care physiotherapy for many years.  His passion for his profession and dedication to his patients propelled him to continue working into his 80th year.  Both Mel and Yanthie welcomed many Sri Lankan immigrants to the Niagara area and Mel paved the way for many Sri Lankan Physiotherapists at GNGH including best friend Francis Perera and his wife Soma.

Mel also enjoyed many hobbies including visits to the casino, playing bridge and attending local theatre especially Shaw Festival or Foster Festival productions.  He was also an avid fan of horse racing and was proud of having owned some horses that raced at the Fort Erie racetrack including a frequent winner named Storm Regent.  Mel was also a devout Catholic and longtime parishioner at Sacred Heart, St. Thomas More, St. Patrick and most recently St. Alexander parish.

Mel’s family is grateful for his long life which is in large part due to the love and support of his siblings, friends, neighbours, patients, colleagues and health care professionals.  Special thanks to the Dialysis Team at St. Catharines General Hospital, especially his Nephrologists Dr. Nagai and Dr. Quinn for the exceptional care.    We are also grateful to the PSWs from Harmony Personal Care Service especially Tanya and Lynda for their professionalism and compassion during Mel’s final months.  Thanks as well to palliative care nurses Colleen, Laurie and Jocelyn and Fr. Paul MacNeil for helping us all through the final weeks and days of Mel’s journey.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Pleasantview Funeral Home on 2250 RR 20 in Fonthill and as per his wishes cremation will take place.  Visitation will take place on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 3:00pm followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 4:00pm.   In honour of Mel’s many philanthropic projects in his homeland, the family would appreciate cash donations which would be used for various charities in Sri Lanka.
