Steven Morello and Jake Sanford each hit solo home runs to help Welland end a two-game losing skid with a 5-2 win Thursday night at home over Hamilton.

Sanford also doubled and scored twice, while Brandon Hupe had two hits and an RBI. Ethan Hunt drove in the other run. Tyler Dupuis singled twice and swiped his 10th base of the season.

On the mound, Welland starter Ben Abram (7-1) pitched into the eighth inning and gave up two runs on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Deivy Mendez struck out two of the three batters he faced for his league-leading eighth save.

Welland (21-6) leads Barrie by 3.5 games atop the IBL standings.

Connor Hicks singled and homered for the Cards (11-14), who have dropped five straight. Josh Niles drove in the other run and Brendon Daley singled twice.

Mizuki Akatsuka (2-2) went six innings in the loss. He allowed three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
