To protect the safety of workers and the public while completing required updates to Niagara Parks’ electrical infrastructure, closures will be implemented within Dufferin Islands beginning Monday, Sept. 9, through Friday, Nov. 1, 2024.

This work is part of general infrastructure updates that have been taking place at Dufferin Islands in recent weeks. Originally planned as a phased project over the winter, the updates were deemed critical to maintaining Niagara Parks’ power grid, prompting the decision to close off sections within Dufferin Islands to expedite completion.

The perimeter parking areas and trails within Dufferin Islands will be closed and construction fencing will be in place to ensure the safe installation of new underground service lines. Traffic detour and park improvement signs will guide visitors and manage traffic flow.

The heavily-used interior walking trails and pedestrian bridges will remain open, as will Burning Springs Hill, which will provide one-way access into Dufferin Islands (exiting via the Niagara Parkway). Parking spaces between Burning Springs Hill and the Niagara Parkway within Dufferin Islands will remain accessible for guests who wish to visit during the closures. However, Niagara Parks reminds guests to be cautious around the perimeter fencing and follow all posted signage.

Dufferin Islands is a popular nature site located just steps from the upper Niagara River and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, frequently visited by both local residents and tourists. These infrastructure updates are in addition to the broader Dufferin Islands Visitor Experience and Ecological Enhancement Initiative, funded by TD Bank Group through the Niagara Parks Foundation. This three-year initiative aims to restore the site's ecological integrity while enhancing recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages and abilities.
