Fenwick tree lighting kicks off the Christmas season

Hundreds turn out for annual event hosted by Fabulous Fenwick Lions

While temperatures were leaning a little to the frosty side, there were nothing but warm feelings of seasonal cheer in downtown Fenwick as the Fabulous Fenwick Lions hosted their annual Christmas Tree Lighting in the village’s downtown.

Hundreds of people turned out for the event, which featured live music by the acoustic duo Doppelganger, which performed a mix of holiday songs with pop and rock classics, and a carol sing with members of Fenwick United Church.

“Every year, we get more and more people here,” Mayor Marvin Junkin said in a short address to the crowd shortly before the tree was lighted. “It's great to see the community support for the effort that goes into this event.”

And what Christmas event would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus himself, who took time out from his busy schedule Saturday to drop in and meet with kids of all ages.

It won’t be that long before the jolly old elf will be loading his sleigh and getting ready to travel some 510,000,000 kilometres around the globe on Christmas Eve, moving at a speed of 10,703,437 km/h. At that rate Santa and his reindeer will visit 390,000 homes every minute, even stopping to eat a cookie or two.

On Saturday, however, it was all about ringing in the season. Guests were treated to free hotdogs, hot chocolate and apple cider, courtesy of the Lions.

After the outdoor festivities, Fenwick United host an evening of holiday activities, including Advent crafts and Christmas stories. There was also free pizza.
