NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF WELLAND

The grand opening for Sparrow Meadows Park at 321 Julia Dr. is set for Sept. 18 at 10 a.m., with a rain date scheduled for Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. if required.
Experiencing a few delays over the summer due to poor weather conditions, contractors worked diligently to get the park ready for the remainder of the season and into the fall.
“Parks are so much more than playgrounds; they can connect us to nature, teach us about our environment, and provide a place of connection and social interaction,” said Dave Steven, manager of parks, forestry, cemeteries, operations, and development. “Parks enrich our lives physically, emotionally, and economically, and we hope this park will become a beloved space for residents of all ages to connect with nature, engage in physical activities, and create lasting memories.
Throughout the last 24-plus months, city staff have engaged with the public to design a park that meets the needs and desires of the community, including public engagement sessions to select the overall features of the park and input on the types and styles of playground equipment installed.
Sparrow Meadows Park is the newest park to open in the City of Welland, with two more new parks planned in the Dain City area as part of the Empire Communities development in the next few years. Construction on the park along Canal Bank Street is anticipated to start this fall.
