PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor in reaction to last week's article, THE BIG READ: Investigation finds disturbing contamination at ex-GM site slated for housing
Is anyone really surprised at this media report? So many of us have been guilty of pretending that our politicians and city staff have been interested in protecting the environment.
This report shows just why developers want to decimate our decreasing agricultural and rural areas. Having already contaminated so much of our city and urban areas they have no interest in cleaning them up. That would impact their profit margins.
The bigger question is why so many politicians would agree to this proposed development, recommended by their planning staff, and endorsed by the Niagara Provincial Conservation Authority, and then try to hide the very troubling environmental reports, financed by us taxpayers, for two years or more?
It's easy for a report to target one single politician as the main scapegoat, which he may well deserve, but to pretend that every other party, willing to recommend and approve such a development, on some seriously contaminated lands, and claim absolutely no responsibility for deliberately hiding these devastating reports is completely defenseless.
