Canada Day in Pelham means a parade – and a party

Community comes together to mark Canada’s 157th birthday

Organizers of Canada Day festivities in Pelham couldn’t have ordered up a better day, weather-wise. Blue skies and sunshine with warm – but not hot – temperatures made for a perfect day for the town’s celebrations. It’s something Mayor Marvin Junkin took note of.

“It’s a great celebration,” he said after a brief ceremony to officially kick off festivities at Harold Black Park. “The weather’s great and it’s good to see the residents coming out to participate in the events.”

Celebrations included activities at the park, including the Rotary Club of Fonthill’s Kids’ Zone, as well as live entertainment and fireworks to top it all off.

But before the Party in the Park, as the event was billed, the Town hosted its annual Canada Grand Parade, winding down Haist Street from A.K. Wigg School to the park.

Junkin said both the Grand Parade and the events at Harold Black don’t just happen in a vacuum. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes.

“Town staff and our volunteers have put a lot of work into it,” Junkin said. “And it's just great to see the residents coming out and enjoying the day.”

The Town also staged house decorating, bike decorating and colouring contests as part of the Canada Day events.
