LETTER: James Culic hits the national anthem nail on the head

Time for Regional Council to just get on with Niagara's business, writes reader Gail Benjafield

PelhamToday received the following letter agreeing with the perspective of columnist James Culic's position that it is time for Niagara council to give up the  practice of singing the national anthem prior to meetings.

Local columnist James Culic's recent Hot Take hit the spot for me. I am old enough to recall that we had to stand at the local movie theatres for the God Save the Queen before the movie started. I recall one disgruntled American movie-goer sitting silently while the rest of us stood.

While Culic's column on our regional council staying with the Canadian Nation Anthem before council meetings is droll, as usual, this column does have a point.

Regional council has recently been taken to task for not staying in it's own lane, as the saying goes. That is, stick to Niagara Regional business, not geopolitical issues, not even federal or Ontario provincial issues. Causes trouble, see? Lots of trouble.

So why not forgo the Canadian national anthem and stick to business? Niagara Peninsula business in particular.
