LETTER: Do health dollars come from magic money tree?

PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor from reader Bruce Timms in relation to the new healthcare deal between Ottawa and the provinces:

The provinces are happy to take a new deal from Ottawa on healthcare just like daycare. But where will Ottawa get the money? Will it print more or open the way for oil pipelines to earn more?

Healthcare funding for provinces is increasing dramatically without identifying the source of new money. Maybe it’s oil, maybe lithium, maybe taxpayers?
Maybe the mythical infinite money tree somewhere in Ottawa?

Regional and town councils are having to balance spending with revenue, a 7.29% tax increase in revenue at the Region.

They call on the province for help, the province helps with budgets for deficit by spending more than it takes in and calls on the feds to help with new money.

The feds must borrow from the world or open up more revenue sources or print more and risk a devalued dollar.

Very few things are free in life; most have to be earned one way or another by someone.

Canada has the resources in the ground and in its people, but we will need to free up the people and the oil and the lithium to earn the money to pay for the health care we want.

There is no infinite money tree.
