Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is gearing up for its much-anticipated annual event, "Art at the Pumphouse," a juried art show and sale that will take place on Aug. 3 and 4, 2024.
The event will feature a diverse array of original works, including paintings, photography, sculpture, woodwork, glass, pottery, textiles, and jewellery, providing a vibrant showcase for artists and artisans from the region and beyond.
Aimee Medina, marketing and communications manager at Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre, shared her excitement about the upcoming event.
“Art at the Pumphouse has flourished over the years. This year, we have over 70 artists and artisans participating, and the quality and range of mediums are truly impressive,” she said.
The event, set against the stunning riverside backdrop of Niagara-on-the-Lake, offers a perfect blend of art and nature. “Guests can view and acquire unique pieces while engaging with artists and artisans. Our galleries will also be filled with outstanding works available for purchase,” Medina noted.
New highlights this year
This year, the event will introduce several new features to enhance the visitor experience. An outdoor marketplace will showcase the craftsmanship of various artisans, while live demonstrations by artists will add an interactive element to the show.
Throughout the two-day event, attendees will have the unique opportunity to see artists at work, creating watercolour paintings, powerful sculptures, and acrylic paintings.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, all-day live music performances by local musicians will take place in the picturesque rose garden, providing a melodic backdrop to the artistic displays. Visitors can enjoy a selection of wine, beer, and cider available for purchase, along with delectable nibbles and refreshments to fuel their art adventure.
Supporting local and beyond
Medina emphasized the importance of the event for the community. “Art has the ability to unite the community, and this annual event provides a platform for artists to showcase their work. It also encourages guests, especially young people, to explore art and be inspired to be creative,” she said.
According to first-time event participant and Niagara-on-the-Lake artist Catilin Wooll, “I heard about the event several years ago and always wanted to participate. This was the first year that the timing worked out, and it will also be my first market. So, I'm excited for the whole experience: meeting the other vendors, engaging with customers in person, and the chance for my work to reach a wider audience.”
The event’s popularity has been growing, attracting local artists and those from across the province and nationwide.
Davoud Khosravi, a renowned Campbellville wood sculptor, returns this year with new pieces. “I am excited to exhibit my newest line of wood sculptures called ‘Body Language’ at Art at the Pumphouse this year. My work is abstract and organic in shape. I am inspired by human form, emotions and movement.”
Tickets and the online show
Tickets for Art at the Pumphouse are priced at $5, with free admission for children 12 and under. A single ticket grants access to both days of the event.
Additionally, an online show will run from July 15 to Aug. 11, offering attendees a sneak peek of the participating artists and a chance to revisit their favourite works and artists after the event.
Looking ahead
Medina shared her excitement about the new artists joining the event this year, particularly young and emerging talents.
“I’m thrilled to see the new works and catch up with returning artists. The popularity of this event keeps growing, and we hope to continue this trajectory, providing a platform for artists from the region and beyond,” she said.
With its rich history and vibrant art scene, Niagara-on-the-Lake provides the perfect setting for this celebration of creativity. Art at the Pumphouse promises to be an engaging and inspiring event that offers something for everyone.
