On Dec. 28, at 12:39 p.m. emergency services personnel responded to a report of a serious stabbing incident in Welland.
Welland-Pelham uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service went to a multi-unit apartment building on East Main Street near River Road. Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics tended to a male victim in his 30s suffering from a serious stab injury from a knife. The victim was treated at the scene and then transported to an out of region hospital by Ornge air ambulance. The victim remains in hospital with serious injuries.
Detectives were assigned to the investigation. They were assisted by uniform officers and detectives from the NRPS Forensic Services Unit. As a result, the ongoing investigation a male suspect was identified. The suspect has been arrested in Welland.
John Anthony Visca, 38, of Welland has been arrested and charged with the Criminal Code offences of:
- Aggravated assault
- Fail to comply with a probation order (two counts)
Visca was held in custody for a video bail hearing to the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on Dec. 29.
The victim and the accused, Visca, were known to each other prior to this incident. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the investigating officers by calling 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1008980.
