Victim knocked out, sexually assaulted by 2 men in Welland

Police say woman made her way to a local hospital on her own for treatment

On Jan. 11, 2025, at approximately 4 a.m. 3 District (Welland / Pelham) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a report of an alleged belated sexual assault that occurred in downtown Welland.

Officers met with the female victim (40s) who reported that on Jan. 10, 2025, at approximately 9 p.m. she had been walking on East Main Street near Cross Street when she was suddenly struck from behind and knocked unconscious. The victim awoke to find that she had been dragged into a near by alley and sexually assault by two unknown men. The victim was left in the alleyway by the suspects. She made her way to a local hospital on her own for treatment of minor physical injuries.

The suspects are described as:

  • Suspect 1- Medium build male.
  • Suspect 2- Male wearing dark balaclava. Appeared to have dark brown sideburns and eyebrows.

Detectives from the NRPS Sexual Assault Unit have been assigned to the investigation. Detectives will be in the area canvassing for information over the next 2-3 days.

Detectives are appealing for surveillance video from the area.  Anyone (residents / business owners) who may have been in the area with cell phones, closed circuit video recording, or dash camera footage between 8:00pm on January 10, 2025, and 4:00am January 11, 2025, is asked to review their footage of the area and contact police if they observe the victim, the suspects, or anything suspicious.  Persons reviewing footage may be able to spot the victim who was wearing dark coloured snow pants and a dark-coloured winter coat at the time of the assault.

The Welland community is asked to maintain heightened vigilance and report anything suspicious.
