It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cathy age 65. Cathy passed away peacefully following a brief illness on December 20th, 2024. She was a loving wife, caring mother and devoted friend.
Cathy was born on April 30th, 1959, to the late John and Margaret Elsden in Shawinigan, Quebec. She grew up in Montreal, Quebec, where she met her future husband, David, and many lifelong friends. Despite growing up in the busy city of Montreal, she was most at home on the family hobby farm in Alexandria, Ontario, where she tended to her pet calf, Tillie, and a host of barn cats. Cathy had a passion for the world of finance, holding a career with Canada Trust and TD Canada Trust for over 25 years. Her love for investing continued long after her retirement. Cathy was married to David Saunders on December 5th, 1992, with whom she raised their two sons in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Cathy was an avid traveller, always in a constant state of research and planning for new experiences. She immersed herself into new languages, cuisines and cultures. Cathy treated each new place as an opportunity to find joy in the unique beauty the world has to offer, whether it was exploring the historic castles and cobblestone streets of Europe or hiking the myriad forest trails of the Americas. When she wasn’t planning something new, Cathy’s favourite spots were camping on Lake Huron, skiing in Ellicottville and soaking up the sights, sun and wildlife of Costa Rica. At home, she satisfied her curiosity by completing jigsaw puzzles, testing out new recipes with David, collecting antiques and immersing herself in historical fiction novels.
Cathy is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, David; her two sons, Derek and Mitchell (Coral) and her sister, Susan Tarrant.
Cathy’s memory will live on in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing her, she will be deeply missed. A funeral service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Humane Society of Greater Niagara in her honour. https://donate.mytributegift.org/?cid=4b579fd3982bdae313afaed629ab37c90f9efdda9af4a29cfee913662157d397&fh=FRP-308918&fp=3089186b5c6c0632d102cc0b9fbb841d8e
