Passed away peacefully at the St. Catharines General Hospital with his loving family by his side on Monday, September 16, 2024 at the age of 93.
Beloved husband and best friend of 67 years to Janet (nee Mashall). Loving father of David (Debbie), Ann (Kelvin) and Stewart (Ladonna); grandfather of Kirstin (Jotham), Robyn (Kerman), Tory (Alisa) and Griffin; step granddad to Kailyn (Jacob) and step-great granddad to Noah.
Carl lived in the Fonthill area all of his life. He grew up on the family farm on Highway 20, and took his farmers work ethic into the business world. As a young man, Carl took a job as a typewriter repairman at Frontier Typewriters in Welland. Eventually became the owner and grew the company to Damudes Office Pro, an office supply & furniture business. He operated the business for 50 years before retiring at the age of 87 years. His son David joined him as a partner in the latter years.
Carl was an avid curler and he served his community as a member of the Welland Kiwanis Club and Rotary Clubs. Carl enjoyed hiking, travelling and especially birding – and was a member of all 3 Niagara Nature Clubs.
He told goofy jokes, loved to buy lottery tickets, made puzzles, liked to putter around the yard, and watch TV with his eyes closed. A meal was not complete without ice cream. He entertained family & neighbours with his ongoing battle with squirrels. He was a kind and generous neighbour and friend.
He was predeceased by his parents Martha (nee Haist) and Fred Damude and by his siblings Harold(June) Damude and Jean (Chuck) Orviss. Carl will also be missed by his many relatives of the extended Damude – Haist and Marshall families.
In keeping with Carl’s wishes cremation has taken place. The family will gather at the Fonthill Cemetery for a private interment.
