Jackfish advance to semifinals with 11-5 win over Kitchener

The defending champs are moving on.

Welland advanced to the second round of playoffs with an 11-5 win Tuesday in Kitchener. The Jackfish, after dropping the first game of the series, won the next three and will face Guelph in the semifinal.

Dawson Tweet went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in the win. Jake Sanford had four hits and drove in four, three of which scored on a bases-clearing double in the second inning.

Matteo Porcellato, Tyler Dupuis and Steven Moretto all drove in a run. Greyson Barrett singled twice and Jonah Weisner went 3-for-6 atop the lineup.

Brandon Underhill (1-0) went 5.2 innings for the win. He allowed five runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

For Kitchener, which entered the playoffs as the eighth and final seed, Raul Gonzalez and Jorden Carthy each had three hits and a solo home run. AJ Karosas added a three-run blast in the fifth. Nolan Misa and Yunior Ibarra had two hits apiece.

Yadian Martinez (0-1), who held Welland in check in the opener, was tagged for eight runs (four earned) on nine hits over 4.2 innings. He walked two and fanned five.

Majors set up showdown with Baycats

London will face Barrie in the semifinal after eliminating Hamilton in four games.

The third-seed Majors ended Hamilton’s season with a 4-1 win Tuesday at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium. Eduardo De Oleo went 3-for-4 with two-run home run.

Cleveland Brownlee and Tristan Osika drove in the other runs. Victor Plaz and Ty Mosher had two hits apiece.

Victor Payano (2-0) struck out 13 over six innings to earn the win. He gave up a run on five hits and a walk. Daniel Gore finished the game for the three-inning save. He struck out three and only allowed two baserunners.

Stephen Whalen drove in Hamilton’s lone run. Luis Bernardo singled, doubled and stole a base, and Keelor Loveridge went 2-for-3.

Takaki Eguchi (0-2) gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits over 4.2 innings to take the loss. He walked one and fanned four.
