A woman was taken to hospital after her Toyota Corolla ended up on the bank of Lake Ontario in Niagara-on-the-Lake Monday. A tow truck driver pulls the car out while a police officer monitors the scene.

A woman was pulled from Lake Ontario on Monday in Niagara-on-the-Lake, after her car ended up on the icy bank of the lake. Niagara Regional Police and a water rescue crew responded at about 11:30 a.m. on Irvine Road where it meets the lake, after a resident called to report the incident.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

When asked the nature of the incident, police spokesperson Stephanie Sabourin said it was believed to have been intentional.

The car, a 2016 Toyota Corolla, was towed from the scene at about 1:30 p.m.

“It’s totalled,” said Jason Thai, from Advance Towing, who explained how when airbags go off, insurance companies usually don’t fix the car because everything needs to be replaced, like the dash and steering.

Thai was called after the woman was pulled from the water at 12:11 p.m. He arrived at 12:25 p.m. to tow the vehicle, he said.

Emergency services were leaving as he arrived, with five or six police officers, firefighters and a rescue boat on standby, though the boat wasn’t needed. He said only one tow truck was needed to pull the car out.

Police said no charges were laid.
