Welland canal-side condo building site sees second collapse

Initial failure occurred Feb. 19

A 226-unit, five-storey, two-tower building under construction at 350 Prince Charles Drive in Welland, just down the street from the Best Western Plus Rose City Suites, had a second partial collapse around 10 AM on Sunday, according to Welland officials.

The initial collapse on the south end of the building occurred eight days ago, prompting a response from Welland Fire and Emergency Services.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of both accidents is not known at this time.

“The Ministry of Labour has control of the site and has prohibited anyone from accessing the building,” said Jack Tosta, chief building official, through a City press statement on Sunday. “The ministry has jurisdiction to conduct an investigation to determine if the condition of the building is safe to allow access for further evaluation of the structural engineering components.”

The cordoned-off area with security fencing is expanding out of an abundance of caution. The trail along the canal in the areas remains closed until further notice.

In addition, the City of Welland issued an order to remedy an unsafe building under the Building Code Act on Feb.19.

Evertrust Development is responsible for the $55 million luxury condo building project. The company released this statement on Monday, Feb. 27.
