Breaking and entering incidents in Canada seem to be on the rise, with a reported 132,155 cases in 2022, or a 5.4% increase from the previous year. Surprisingly, this rise came after a period of declining incidents.
The research team at Handybros gathered data from Canada’s official statistical office relating to burglary offences in Canadian cities.
It is often assumed that Alberta and Ontario have the highest number of home raids in Canada, but according to the study, Winnipeg in Manitoba has recorded the most incidents.
Police officers in Winnipeg have been kept busy due to the staggering number of 811 burglary incidents per 100K people. To put that into perspective, Winnipeg residents are experiencing 467% more burglary incidents compared to Barrie, which has the lowest burglary incident rate.
Alberta takes three positions in the top 10 burglary hotspots, with Lethbridge ranking second with a rate of 764 recorded incidents per 100K residents.
Saskatoon is next on the list, ranking third, among the most burgled cities in Canada, with reports of burglary incidents at a rate of 761 per 100K people.
Following closely behind Lethbridge and Saskatoon, Regina ranks fourth as the most burgled city in Canada, with 733 burglary incidents per 100K residents.
Kelowna of British Columbia comes in fifth on the list with about 709 incidents per 100K, while Moncton experiences 607 burglary incidents per 100K people, taking the sixth spot on this list.
Up next are two cities in Alberta. Edmonton ranks seventh, with 547 reported burglary incidents per 100K residents. Following closely behind is Calgary, which takes the eighth spot with 519 incidents per 100K residents.
Rounding out the top 10 are cities in Ontario. Windsor leads the pack, ranking ninth with 456 incidents per 100K people. At the tenth position are the tri-cities Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo reporting 438 incidents per 100K residents.
On the other hand, some regions in Canada experienced significantly fewer burglaries. For people residing in Ontario who are looking to relocate to an area in the city with a lower risk of burglary, they may find it comforting to know that Toronto and Barrie are among the safest places in Canada. Toronto has around 162 recorded incidents per 100K residents, while Barrie has 143 incidents per 100K people.
