In a Welland courtroom on Friday, Oct. 27, legal counsel Tessa Willebrand appeared in court virtually as agent for Steven Soos’ lawyer, Andrew Burton. Soos, a Welland resident and former candidate for various Niagara political offices, is a social advocate for those experiencing mental health issues, addiction, and homelessness. It was the second time Soos’ case had been before the court since he was arrested by Niagara Regional Police on August 17 on two counts of mischief.
Willebrand said that the defense was awaiting disclosure documents to arrange a Crown pre-trial conference, and requested an adjournment to December 1 at 9 AM, which was granted by Justice of the Peace R. J. Whalen.
In an email comment to PelhamToday, Soos said that, “I have instructed my lawyer to enter a plea of not guilty, and to also file an application for change of venue. I am also considering filing either a human rights complaint on the NRPS for the treatment I received when assaulted in custody, or a civil suit that will cover negligent investigation, malicious prosecution, unlawful detainment, and breach of my charter rights. I will continue to defend my good name.”
