Pelham Fire Station 1 flags at half mast

Retired volunteer firefighter Don Sabo passed away February 23

The flags at Pelham Fire Station 1 on Highway 20 flew at half mast on Tuesday, Feb. 28, in honour of retired volunteer firefighter Don Sabo, who passed away last Thursday, February 23, age 88.

Pelham Fire Chief Bob Lymburner said that Sabo joined the Fonthill Volunteer Fire Association in 1964, and saw 30 years of active service.

“He continued to be active in the association after his retirement, and was at the meeting last month,” said Lymburner. “He was a good man who will be missed.”

Sabo worked at TRW in St. Catharines, retiring in 1983. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed trailering throughout Canada and the US, and wintering in Florida with his wife Colleen, who passed away in 2022.

Sabo is survived by his three daughters and their families. He was predeceased by his 12 siblings.

A celebration of his life will take place at the Fonthill Legion at a future date.
