As Pelham residents wake up on Wednesday to a new year, they are being reminded there will be a number of closures on New Year’s Day on Jan. 1

All municipal offices and facilities, including the Meridian Community Centre, will be closed. In the event of an after-hours emergency related to water, sewer or road conditions and where there is imminent danger to public or private property, residents can call 905-892-2607 and follow the prompts or dial 905-734-0892 directly. For non-emergency requests, please visit pelham.ca or submit a service request at www.pelham.ca/shareit

Both grocery stores in town — Sobey’s and Food Basics — will be closed as will the LCBO and Beer Store. The LCBO Convenience Outlet inside the Fenwick Avondale at 786 Canboro Rd., however, will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Avondale location at 1390 Haist St. in Fonthill will also be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the Circle-K convenience store at Welland Rd. and Pelham St. also remains open on its usual 24-hour schedule.

Pharmacies will be closed. There will be no garbage collection, resulting in a one-day delay in the collection schedule.

Regionally, all Niagara Region facilities will be closed as will Niagara College campuses in Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake, as will the campus of Brock University in St. Catharines. The closure includes amenities normally open to the public such as the Benchmark Restaurant, Benchmark Café and the Wine Visitor and Education Centre.

There will be no mail delivery and Niagara Transit will not be operating on any of its routes or specialized services. Banks are closed.

As for retail shopping, most stores and malls across Niagara will be closed. Exceptions include the Outlet Collection at Niagara in Niagara-on-the-Lake, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Walmart locations at 102 Primeway Dr. in Welland (7 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and 7481 Oakwood Dr. in Niagara Falls (7 a.m. to 11 p.m.).
