Sightings of northern lights — known as an aurora borealis —were spotted across southern Ontario Thursday night.
They are caused by solar particles from the sun sent toward the Earth. Experts say an increase in activity—a powerful geomagnetic storm currently underway— created particularly bright lights, a cycle that typically repeats approximately every 11 years.
