A group from the Third Fonthill Beaver Scouts recently joined Captain Jason Longhurst, Fire Prevention Officer with the Town of Pelham, to learn about general fire safety at Pelham Fire Station 1.
One of the components of Longhurst’s job is to provide outreach opportunities to community groups, especially youth.
Volunteer Scouter “Rainbow” (Julie Seppala) donned bunker gear as part of the emphasis on reducing the potential fear factor for kids, when they may encounter firefighters in full protection equipment.
The Beavers, which includes kids between the ages of 5 and 7, learned how to use a fire extinguisher, plan a home escape route in the case of fire, and also got a look inside a pumper truck.
Longhurst is available to answer questions, plus provide smoke alarm testing and battery replacement throughout the year for Pelham residents and can be reached at (905) 980-6647.
