Making Pelham’s public hub more inviting, inclusive

Extensive Town Hall renovations a bonus for Summer Chill visitors

Welcoming friendly faces and accessible spaces. This is the goal of the Town of Pelham’s renovations to its Town Hall, for which an official ribbon cutting will be held this Thursday, June 22.

“We had the opportunity to make it easier for residents of all ages and abilities to access clean, very easy to use spaces that are really forward-facing for the community,” says Leah Letford, communications specialist with the Town, noting the upgrades will benefit not just those visiting the municipal facility but the many who congregate in the adjacent Peace Park as well.

“When we look at how the community accesses Town Hall, with it being within one of our largest community event spaces—for example, the Pelham Farmers Market that is operating in their 20th year, then if our facility is closed what they are able to offer is limited.”

The upgrades are intended to remedy that concern. The additions feature public washrooms that are accessible from the building’s interior and exterior, public-use meeting space with audio/visual infrastructure, an expanded and brighter council chambers, a utility room—and, for good measure, a beautifying clock tower. All of this complements the needs of the community, says Letford, especially during the warmer months when the Summer Chill Series, a three-pronged initiative between the Town, the Farmer’s Market, and the Fonthill Bandshell Committee, takes over Peace Park every Thursday from June 22 to September 7.

“We have seen growth in Pelham, so knowing we’ve had the forward-thinking for what is going to be a continued need is really nice to see.”

The official opening, complete with ribbon cutting ceremony, will take place at 4 PM on Thursday. The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend.
