PelhamToday received the following letter about plowing snow on side streets and how it impacts walking.
I walk every morning. I have been doing so for going on 13 years. I look forward to this except at this time of year. I don't mind the cold, I dress for that. I don't mind the snow, I wear the right kind of boots. I don't mind the fact that my route is mostly devoid of sidewalks, I stick to the right side of the road.
What gets me every year is the total disregard the Town has for the people that are sidewalk challenged.
The Town seems to have decided that the side streets don't need to be plowed out in a timely manner, you know, within a week of the last snowfall. The pattern repeats itself. First the snow. Then the vehicles drive over the snow and compress it. A cold snap freezes this mess and the road is now too dangerous to walk on. I could rant about, "I pay my taxes" but what's the point. The Town has certain irrefutable, undeniable, mandatory tasks. I thought my taxes might partially go towards fulfilling the Town's core duties, but no.
Anyways, I was going to write the authorities in charge but that requires a form, followed by a response and further investigation, possibly a consultant's report and a committee to thoroughly investigate. Here's hoping.
