Pelham residents are being reminded that there are rules surrounding the use of fireworks in the town. Steps should be taken, even when using sparklers, to ensure safety of others.

The Town is reminding residents that there are rules surrounding the use of fireworks in Pelham.

Monday is Canada Day, one of the select number of days throughout the year when consumer fireworks may be used. Before deciding to purchase and use fireworks, residents need to ensure they know the laws governing their use, including federal regulations and the Town’s fireworks bylaw.

Some of those rules surrounding the use of fireworks include:

• Fireworks must be set off at least 50 metres away from woodlands, gas stations, nursing/retirement homes, boarding kennels or stables, churches, schools, and daycares.

• Fireworks must be set off at least 10 metres from buildings, RVs, tents, or trailers.

• Fireworks may not be set off in an area with undergrowth, dry grass, or flammable or combustible substances.

• Leftover fireworks shall be collected immediately and disposed of properly.

For safety:

• Do not use any damaged fireworks.

• Never set off fireworks inside.

• Refer to the safety instructions on the label for minimum stand-off distances for both the person launching the fireworks and for spectators.

• Ensure there are no overhead obstructions.

• Know how fireworks will act and work. Once they are lit, they can't be turned off.

• Always have a charged hose or a bucket of water close by.

More information about the use of fireworks in town can be found at www.pelham.ca/fireworks.
