Birds of prey take flight in protected setting

Talented PelhamToday photography contributor Robert Van Deemter sends in this gallery of amazing images taken last week at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy, located 10 minutes south of Simcoe.

“Today I ventured out to the Canadian Raptor Conservancy to get photos of a snowy owl and try out some new camera settings,” says Van Deemter. “After going through 450 photos I've got it down to a short list of 12.” (Two more came later.)

According to its website, the Conservancy is a 20-plus year-old organization that provides education about Canada’s various species of birds of prey. “Through entertaining and informative live shows, we ignite the imaginations of spectators and engage students to find an interest in the magnificence of birds, and the wonders of nature.”

The facility is involved in caring for sick and injured birds of prey that have come from wild populations.

“We work very closely with veterinarians to assess injuries and try, if at all possible, to return the birds back to the wild. We typically take in over 50 birds per year into our rehab program.”
