Yvon Audette, a member of the Fonthill Volunteer Fire Association, and chair of the group’s annual Christmas Toy & Pet Drive, and his dog, Tuffy, aboard the Pelham Fire Department’s 1939 Ford Pumper. The association is ready to help make Christmas a little brighter for people – and pets – who need a helping hand this holiday season.

Pelham volunteer firefighters want to make the holidays just that much brighter for children in town, who, without a little generosity from the community, might not have a Christmas at all.

With that goal in mind, the Fonthill Volunteer Fire Association’s annual Toy & Pet Drive gets underway Saturday, Dec. 7, and runs through Sunday, Dec. 15. Donations may be made at Station 1 (Fonthill) on Hwy. 20, during office hours and evenings from 6-8 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The drive is something the association looks forward to doing every year, said Yvon Audette, chair of the committee that runs the campaign.

“I’ve got my regular people that come out every year for the sorting night and everything, so it's going pretty well,” Audette said.

The association is looking for gifts appropriate for children and youth from ages infant to 18 and well as pet food and supplies. People in Pelham have always been generous in the past, Audette said.

“It’s gone pretty well for what we've needed so far,” Audette said. Our numbers have gone up again, but hopefully we'll get through that, no problem.”

Donations can also be dropped off on weekends between noon and 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Hampers will be located at the CIBC, Meridian Credit Union, Pelham Town Hall, Pelham Library and Meridian Community Centre.

Once collected, the items will be distributed via Pelham Cares, Audette said.
