Fenwick Flossie meets her adoring fans at last year's Groundhog Day celebration at Centennial Park.

Fenwick Flossie isn’t a meteorologist in the traditional sense, but she has been predicting the arrival of spring in Pelham for nearly three decades. This year is no different as the groundhog is preparing to emerge from her burrow to let everyone know how much longer winter will last.

In anticipation of her arrival at Centennial Park on Feb. 2, the Fabulous Fenwick Lions have invited children from nearby schools to come cheer for Flossie and help her look for her shadow.

If Flossie sees her shadow, it means six more weeks of winter and if she doesn’t, it means spring will make an early arrival.

Lion Mike Manzoni, one of the service club’s newest members, described the Groundhog Day celebrations as “great fun.”

“I first attended this event in 2023, and it was such a fun thing to see the excitement on the kids’ faces and watching them cheer for Flossie,” he said.

Manzoni said everyone in the community is invited to attend.

Students from neighbouring schools Fonthill Montessori, Wellington Heights, and St. Ann Catholic have also been invited and will be bused in for the festivities.

The kids have been participating in a colouring contest and the winners will be announced at the event. Prizes will be awarded to both a girl and a boy from each grade at each school.

There will be hot chocolate for the kids as well as chocolate chip cookies to enjoy. The event begins at 10 a.m. with Flossie expected to emerge from her burrow at 10:30 a.m.
