LETTER: Where's the respect for municipal staff

Sunshine List should at least keep up with inflation, says reader

PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor regarding last week's Hot Take column:

Mr Culic wants/expects municipal staff to be replaced on an almost daily basis but, I’m sure, expects nothing but the best when he has to deal with these same city workers. That said I’m sure he would waste no time demeaning municipal staff who don’t meet his expectations. He’d describe them as over-paid and under-worked.

Based on his recent column he would likely throw in a monkey reference while he was at it.

I’m not sure why or how he sees municipalities as labour sources for the private sector. They aren’t and shouldn’t be. A good work environment and a decent salary will foster loyalty and longevity and that will produce experienced and capable city workers.

I guess he’s never worked in an environment where he had to train new staff on a regular basis but I can assure him it takes a heavy toll on an organization, private or public.

As a 35-year City of Toronto employee, I was never in favour of my neighbours and friends knowing how much I made. I never knew what they earned. I accepted the circumstance but feel the Sunshine List criteria/amount should have at least been altered to reflect inflation.

Mr Culic’s entire rant makes me think he has little respect for public employees and I think that opinion is unfortunate and unwarranted.
