LETTER: Don't forget fetal risk

Alcohol can severely affect babies in the womb, says reader

PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor regarding conflicting assertions about the health effects of alcohol:

So …the US Surgeon General says alcohol raises the risk of cancer. So… a Brock professor hopes cardiac benefits might offset that risk.
Both fail to make a priority of warning the public about the proven risks of prenatal drinking. Cancer and heart problems are risk to adults, but prenatal drinking can cause a spectrum of lifelong birth defects, irreversible brain damage, emotional instability and learning problems. Let’s broadcast those dangers first and foremost.
