Two common courtesies would help avoid pedestrian collisions

PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor concerning bicyclist behaviour on the Steve Bauer Trail:

My wife and I walk a portion of the Steve Bauer Trail almost daily. People are usually friendly as you pass by them. We know and accept this is a shared trail with bikers and Steve was a racer.

The riders approaching from the back are a concern. Most bike riders will give you a heads up by stating they are passing on the left or ring a bell. However, there are many riders that give you no warning and fly by as fast as they can. For all riders we need two common courtesies:

If coming from behind, let us know you are coming, how many riders and slow down, and:

If coming from the front, slow down when you are passing people.

People who are seniors do not have the best balance and may accidentally fall towards a bike rider.

Another issue is bikes crossing at intersections. An example is the one at Timber Creek Crescent and Line Avenue. Please get off your bike and walk across.

Drivers coming to the intersection cannot react quickly if riders just go flying through. Town signage would help here.
