LETTER: Are we clearing walkways or brining them?

Shoppers subjected to salty slogs, says reader

PelhamToday received the following letter regarding overly salty sidewalks:

I’m in my 80s and appreciate ice-free walks...but. Have you been to the Food Basics/Family Pharma/Dollarama sidewalks lately?

I shop often at these three businesses as well as others in that strip mall, and over the lengthy cold spell the amount of salt put down is totally excessive and unnecessary. It makes me think that whoever is applying it must own stock in Morton's or Sifto.

All of this salt ends up in our waterways, on our cars, in the buildings. Food Basics carts are rusting out faster than my car. This summer I expect I will catch some salted fish in the canal.

Please think of what you are doing to the environment and seriously reduce the amount of salt you are using.
