Continuing fallout over contamination at former GM site disturbs reader

PelhamToday received the following letter to the editor regarding the continuing coverage of toxic contamination found in St. Catharines:

How anyone can read this frightful and shocking story and not demand action be taken against those who allowed this life-threatening situation to continue, through multiple councils, growing City staff numbers, and those at Regional level, who will have known about it, and still said nothing, then not demand instant action against all those responsible immediately, is a graphic illustration of just what is wrong and corrupt within Niagara Region and its 12 municipalities today.

I don’t have a problem with targeting a recent mayor as a main player in this situation, and making his decisions accountable.

But what of all the other mayors and councils over the past 20 years or more?

What about the City Hall staff, who may have all known about this appalling contamination on this GM site yet may have helped to hide the real facts from those citizens whose safety they claim to protect?

How many consultants have been employed by St. Catharines taxpayers to produce reports that City staff have chosen to hide?

This entire neighbourhood deserves far, far more.

This young mother’s memories of her growing up and exploring her neighbourhood and having fun were truly moving and memories many of us can relate to.

To have to suddenly learn that her own daughter can never experience such simple adventure and excitement is something she should never have had to accept, just because those she elected to protect her family chose not to do so.

Any St. Catharines politician, or City staff bureaucrat, over the past nearly 20 years, who has been aware of this truly nightmare contamination issue and has chosen to ignore it, if they have any honour at all, should resign, and they deserve to be prosecuted.
