The K – 8 Indigenous Transitions Coach will provide intensive supports to Indigenous learners with the goal of transitioning into and out of elementary school. The successful candidate will build positive relationships with Indigenous students and their families by identifying barriers and solutions to student learning, engagement and well-being. In addition, the candidate will collaborate with the school to engage with parents, guardians, families and communities to build trust, relationships and facilitate communication and dialogue. The candidate will build strong relationships with Indigenous childcare centres to support the transition of students to our local elementary schools and collaborate with elementary educators to support the integration of Indigenous ways of knowing and being. The candidate will facilitate a circle of care to ensure that effective supports are leveraged to improve the success of Indigenous students in Kindergarten through grade 8. Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, skills, experiences, and attributes:
• Degree or diploma in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies/Services, First Nations Family Support/Community Worker, Child and Youth Worker or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience working with and supporting children;
• Knowledge of Indigenous traditional teachings, cultures, perspectives, values, and history, and a deep connections to the local Indigenous community;
• Awareness of Indigenous community resources and ability to connect students and families to these resources;
• Demonstrates understanding of equity, especially in areas of special education, mental health and Indigenous learning;
• Strong organizational and communication skills, proficient computer skills and a willingness to be flexible;
• Proficient in the use of online platforms/programs (i.e. Google Meet) and comfortable working in a virtual environment as required to support students remotely when in-person meetings are not possible
• Valid driver’s license and the willingness and ability to travel for school board related business is required
• Preference will be given to candidates who identify as Indigenous, Métis or Inuit [please note that candidates who wish to qualify for preferential consideration must self-identify within their application for this position]
