The Role

The Assistant Manager of Environment ensures compliance with local, provincial, and federal environmental regulations by conducting audits, reviewing processes, and collaborating with departments to address non-compliance. The role supports managers in developing and implementing environmental strategies, responding to regulatory changes, and promoting sustainable development by minimizing operational impact, recommending corrective actions, and preventing violations.

Key Accountabilities

Environmental Compliance Management

  • Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of an effective

Environmental Compliance Management system.

  • Collaborate with peers to implement improvement opportunities in environmental performance and reporting.

Risk Management

  • Ensure Steelworks operations manage environmental risks to comply with local, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Supervise regular environmental audits to monitor corporate environmental performance. Government Relations Advise on relevant regulatory changes and industry best practices.
  • Promote and facilitate the implementation of safe, cost-effective, and commercially proven environmental management processes and controls.

Project Development

  • Assist in developing projects to address legacy environmental issues in compliance with the Legacy Environmental Action Plan (LEAP) and closed property commitments.

Corporate Strategy Support

  • Support corporate strategy development in sustainability, by-product monetization, ESG, and other environmental objectives.

Strategic Initiatives and Government Affairs

  • Align environmental compliance and sustainability efforts with business objectives and regulatory advocacy.
  • Collaborate with the government affairs team to track regulatory changes and integrate them into environmental strategies.

Core Competencies and Skills Required

  • University degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a comparable field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning, execution, and monitoring.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders at all levels, including government agencies, community groups, and internal teams.
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Knowledge of sustainability practices and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria.
  • Ability to handle environmental incidents and emergencies effectively.
  • Experience in developing and implementing emergency response plans.

This is an exempt position.
